Vila Maninga:
Caring for the poor and needy of Mozambique

Vila Maninga - a place of refuge

Back in 1980 Frikkie & Juanita de Jager (founders of Vila Maninga) had a vision. They felt God calling them to set up homes for orphans and destitute children in rural Africa.

They established Manhinga Village in eastern Zimbabwe Twenty years later it is completely self-sufficient, caring for 130 orphans and homeless children.

After the Mozambican civil war ended in 1992, the de Jagers started a similar project - Vila Maninga.

Vila Maninga means Village of Places of Refuge. Today it is exactly that, consisting of the first foster homes for orphans, a large farm, a small clinic, basic vocational training, a Christian Bible College and a Primary School.

At present Vila Maninga is home to about 25 orphans and destitute children. Their stories of why they come to Vila Maninga are all different but all tragic.

Some of the orphans have lost their parents in the war, some from AIDS, malaria and other illnesses and diseases. Some have even suffered abuse. All of them have had hard lives and have not had a chance to live as children.

The children are referred to Vila Maninga via the social welfare system and for all of them it is the chance of a new life.

The orphans who live at Vila Maninga are cared for in African foster families, looked after by parents who may or may not have had children of their own. The families live in circular African huts called rondavels.

These special supervised family "units", mean that the children can grow up in a caring African family, living the sames lives as the other local children.

The community lives in a style appropriate to local customs, not the customs of a western lifestyle.

Development continues at Vila Maninga and in the future there will be as many as six rondavels each housing a foster family with as many as 25 children in each.

Vila Maninga - Bible College

Vila Maninga Bible College began in 1996. It takes in students from all over Mozambique for a two year course.

The majority of students come from remote rural areas of Mozambique. Many of the students cannot even read or write, so the course begins with a literary course.

The Bible College course covers the basic teaching of the Bible and shows how it is relevant to our lives today.

The students live at Vila Maninga with foster families. Whilst living and studying at Vila Maninga they and their children all receive free food, accommodation, lessons and healthcare. The wives also receive training in adult literacy, sewing, health and hygiene.

When not in class, students also work on the farm at Vila Maninga, helping to support the community.

For most students who have never left their local area, attending Vila Maninga Bible College is a new and exciting experience.

At the end of the course, each student graduates with a diploma from an internationally recognised Bible Course and return to their local area, either to set up up a new church, or work in an existing one.

Working in church, supporting themselves and their families is no easy task. But they graduating students are an enormous credit to their communites, working not only as Pastors, but also sharing their healthcare knowledge and literacy too.

Pastors can minister to the entire community in many ways.

Vila Maninga - Farm

Vila Maninga is situated on a large 1,000 hetare farm. Originally an old Portugese tobacco farm, it lay derelict for years after the Portuguese left in the 1970s.

Today, the farm at Vila Maninga performs two main functions: its helps make the community self-sufficient and provides vital experience for those learning basic farming techniques.

Community inhabitants learn farming techniques as they work on Vila Maninga's large farm, helping to provide food for themselves and the staff of teachers, builders and other general workers.

Crops at Vila Maninga
The main crop on the farm is maize, which harvested and ground down to fine flour. The flour is then mixed with water to make sadza - the staple diet in this part of southern Africa.

Sunflowers also form part of the crops from the farm. Seeds from the sunflowers are crushed to make sunflower oil. The farm also provides a vital supply of vegetables, beans, fruit and rice.

Climate of Mozambique
Mozambique has a hot and tropical climate, with rains which have become increasingly more unpredictable in recent years. The years seem to swing between drought and floods, as a result. The floods of 2000 were the worst seen for a long time, whilst the drought of 2002 affected not only Mozambique but most of Southern Africa too.

The effects of drought can be catastrophic. Most Mozambicans live in abject poverty. Growing crops simply to feed their families, is the only way to live.

Development at Vila Maninga
Through funding, Vila Maninga has purchased a tractor as well as new planter equipment to help make the farming process easier.

Vila Maninga seeks funding to develop irrigation channels for the large maize and sunflower crop.

Vila Maninga - The de Jagers

Pastor Frikkie and Juanita de Jager are the sort of inspiring people you meet once in a lifetime,
if you are lucky.

They have been working as Christian missionaries in Zimbabwe and Mozambique for the past 40 years, mainly in the rural areas.

They met when Pastor de Jager was a missionary in western Rhodesia and after marrying, they travelled tirelessly into remote rural areas of Mozambique and Zimbabwe, preaching and working with the small African churches.

They were the only missionaries of their church to stay in Eastern Zimbabwe during the fight for Independence, feeling that their ministry was too important to leave. They experienced violence and tragedy during this time, but the Lord protected them and blessed their ministry.

In 1982, they established a childrens’ home in Eastern Zimbabwe. Today, it is Manhinga Village, which cares for 130 orphans and destitute children in supervised Christian foster families.

Maningha Vilaage has a Primary School and is on its' way to self-sufficiency. It was recently acclaimed as the most successful Childrens homes in Zimbabwe. It reported that the children are the most balanced because they grow up in rural African families and not under western ideals.

Word of their work spread and in 1992 after the civil war had ended across the border in Mozambique, the de Jagers were given a derelict farm.

That derelict farm is now the project, Vila Maninga.

Vila Maninga - Fundraising

Funds raised by UK charity
Vila Maninga UK is a small UK based charity which helps to sustain and develop the Vila Maninga Project. The monthly running costs amount to £2500 and cover monthly wages, electricity, fuel, farming and office supplies.

The charity's running costs are funded privately. This combined with the fact that all who for Vila Maninga UK do so voluntarily, ensures that all donations go directly to the project in Mozambique.

Our current projects include raising funds to purchase much needed farming equipment and to finance a building plan which will increase capacity of the primary school, college and village.
