Maninga

Refuge, Education & Hope in Mozambique

About

Maninga is a UK registered charity working in partnership with a small community called Vila Maninga in rural central Mozambique and Frikkie & Juanita de Jager who work there and in other parts in Mozambique. We work to empower the local people through education, sustainable development and training alongside providing emergency care.

THE PAST

Since its beginnings in the 1990's many children have been fostered and cared for; vocational skills training courses have been taught (from sewing to farming and many more); health training and adult literacy has been provided; Pastors have been trained; thousands of children have been educated; emergency medical care has been given and above all a community has developed which embodies hope, justice, love and the future of Mozambique. For many years, the community - Vila Maninga - consisted of

  • Foster homes for orphans;
  • A Primary school;
  • Adult literacy & vocational skills training;
  • Homes for the elderly;
  • A Christian training college that took in students and families from over Mozambique
  • A large farm & tree plantation which was developed to enable future self-sufficiency.

THE PRESENT

Today, the project is going through change.

  1. Firstly, because of a change of regulations, the community is not allowed to care for orphans and elderly in the project. (Instead the charity is supporting care for them in home-based care).
  2. Secondly a huge cyclone destroyed a main building in the project which needs to be repaired.
  3. Thirdly, there has been many local discussions as to who would take on the day-day running of the project. It is very exicting that the the local community have set up an association to run it and the charity will support them to enable this to happen.

Therefore at present, the empty buildings are going to be revamped and hopefully turned into a Technical secondary school and a clinic. The 800 strong primary school is still going strong and the vocational skills training, literacy work and farm developments will all continue as will care for the poor and needy on the periphery of this community.

Alongside this, the charity and the community support secondary school and technical school education together with tertiary education in this community and others around it. We are also supporting more families and children in home-based care in another community on the coast of Mozambique in the Inhambane province, alongside around Vila Maninga.

Thousands of children's and adults lives have been transformed through the impact of Maninga. Many have arrived at the community in utter despair, needing refuge and care and they have been transformed into givers. The work at Maninga is hard work but planting small seeds will bear great fruit for Mozambique in the years to come.
